Málagahoy: HM Hospital Santa Elena applies the latest technology to operate stones in the bile duct

The International Hospital HM Santa Elena is the first private Andalusian centre which performs a transcystic examination of the bile duct using the SpyGlass™ Discover endoscope, latest technique for bile duct stone surgery. This is a major breakthrough in this field, which, according to the health centre, positions it as a technological reference in the treatment of bile duct stones, a very common condition but one that entails difficulties and complications for patients. With this technology, safety is improved and recovery time for the patient is improved, according to the hospital.

"The presence of stones in the bile duct, so-called choledocholithiasis, can lead to the development of obstructive jaundice (yellowing of the skin due to accumulation of bile), bile infections (cholangitis) or acute pancreatitis. Once diagnosed, they need to be removed to avoid complications. The most common method is to perform an endoscopy that cannulates the bile duct through the oral cavity via the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, the so-called ERCP. In a second stage, the patient needs to be operated on to remove the gallbladder. It is therefore necessary to perform two procedures. Moreover, the endoscopic removal of choledocholithiasis by ERCP, although safe, is not without serious risks," he says. Antonio González SánchezHead of the General and Digestive System Surgery Department at HM International Hospital Santa Elena.
