What is appendicitis?
Acute appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small tube-like structure at the beginning of the colon. It is one of the most common surgical emergencies worldwide.
Common symptoms
- Abdominal pain starting in the central area and moving to the right lower quadrant
- Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite
- Low fever
- Tenderness to touch on the right side of the abdomen
- Difficulty walking upright
When to go to the emergency room?
If the pain progressively intensifies, is accompanied by vomiting and is located in the lower right side of the abdomen, you should go to hospital immediately. Untreated appendicitis can lead to perforation and peritonitis, a serious complication.
Diagnosis
- Physical examination (Blumberg's sign, McBurney's sign)
- CBC (leukocytosis)
- Abdominal ultrasound or CT scan
Treatment
- Appendectomysurgery to remove the appendix.
- It can be done by laparoscopywith less postoperative pain and faster recovery.
Conclusion
Appendicitis does not give second chances. Recognising the symptoms and acting quickly can prevent further complications.
